In her first public statements about her rumored role in ‘The Hobbit,’ actress Saoirse Ronan told IrishTimes.com:
“No, nothing has actually been confirmed yet. I’d love to get a role in The Hobbit . I think everybody in the world would like a role in The Hobbit .”
It has been reported that Ms. Ronan is up for the rumored role of Itaril, a character created specifically for the two Hobbit films. Itaril is described as a Silvan Elf chosen to become part of the Woodland King’s Guard. Thanks to Ringer Merielle for the heads up, and click the link for the complete details.
Great news! Looks like it was confirmed that Saoirse will join the cast of The Hobbit. Thanks to Sarah for the info.
According to an interview with Ros Hubbard, casting director for The Hobbit, the production has one more cast member: Saoirse Ronan (Hanna, Atonement, The Lovely Bones). The actress has been rumored for the film over the past couple months, but this is the first confirmation that she is indeed cast.
We don’t know what role she’ll play (she’s been rumored as Itaril) but when the interviewer asks Ros Hubbard about the presence of Irish actors Aidan Turner, James Nesbitt and Saoirse Ronan in The Hobbit, she says,
…working with Peter Jackson is like working with a family. So they’ll have a great time. Saoirse’s family will go too, everyone is very close and very loving on those sorts of jobs. It’s not like typical studio movies at all.
This is interesting, because only a week ago the actress said that no offer had come her way to take part in The Hobbit, saying “Yeah if I was asked, certainly” when asked about the rumor that she was cast. Her father followed up with “it would be something that would be wonderful if it happens. I don’t think all of the cast members have been chosen or asked yet because it’s going to be such a long project.”
Thanks to Jessica for the heads up.

Saoirse, her Hanna co-star Eric Bana and director Joe Wright will be attending a event at New York Comic-Con. The first sneak peak from the film will be presented in the event as well. Can’t wait to see it!!

Actor Bruce Willis is currently in talks to star in the upcoming film Violet and Daisy, the directorial debut of Precious screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Carey Mulligan and Saoirse Ronan are currently attached to star in the film and the site is also reporting that Machete star Danny Trejo is in talks to join the project.
Not much is known about the plot of the film, but the site said that it will be a mix of Thelma & Louise, Superbad and Pulp Fiction. Fletcher will direct the film from his own script. It was said that the film would start shooting sometime this fall.
We’ll be sure to keep you posted with any further news regarding Violet and Daisy as soon as we have more information.
Violet and Daisy comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Bruce Willis. The film is directed by Geoffrey Fletcher.
Moving aggressively, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group has acquired all available foreign territory rights to Focus Features’ adventure thriller “Hanna,” from director Joe Wright.
Deal throws the weight of a studio behind “Hanna” in many international territories.
Focus — Universal’s specialty division — will retain distribution rights to “Hanna” in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Israel, Middle East and CIS. Sony Pictures Entertainment will release the film everywhere else.
Pact was engineered by Alison Thompson’s Focus Features Intl., which was shopping the project to foreign buyers at Cannes, and marks the biggest deal of the market so far. It also pairs a U.S. major with a U.S. studio specialty division.
“Hanna,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, is in its final month of filming in Europe and will be released in 2011. Project reteams Wright and Ronan, who worked together on Focus’ “Atonement.” Universal distributed “Atonement” internationally.
Production Weekly reports that Ronan will star in The Tribes of Palos Verdes, an adaptation of Joy Nicholson’s young adult novel to be directed by Liz Friedlander.
Published in 1998, Palos Verdes takes a fairly dark perspective on California surfing culture, following a teeange girl who moves there with her troubled family and finds her only outlet in surfing. Director Friedlander has only one feature credit, the dancing drama Take The Lead, but has been behind several episodes of One Tree Hill and 90210, both shows that may influence her style with more stories of teen angst. Lucky for her she’s got an ace in the hole in Ronan, who even when mired in something as crazy as The Lovely Bones can pull off anything she wants. She’s currently playing a teen assassin in Joe Wright’s Hanna, but with nothing else pressing on the horizon, Palos Verdes could easily be what’s next.
British actress Carey Mulligan gets cast in a female “buddy movie” while Jessica Biel goes from mob mistress to state witness.
Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan (An Education) and Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) are set to star in the dark comedy Violet and Daisy, described as Thelma and Louise meets Superbad and Pulp Fiction. Oscar-winning screenwriter Geoffrey Fletcher (Precious) wrote the script and will direct.
Ronan is in production with the Joe Wright film about a teenage assassin, Hanna, starring Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. Mulligan has been working on Never Let Me Go with Kiera Knightley about dark schoolgirl secrets. Fletcher is also finishing Attica, a prison riot drama by director Doug Liman
This is in no way official – and since it was posted on April 1st, we’re going to wait for a proper announcement before we truly get excited – but word has it that Carey Mulligan and The Lovely Bones’ Saoirse Ronan have signed on to star in Violet And Daisy for Geoffrey Fletcher.
Having just scored an Oscar for writing Precious, he’s looking to achieve a long-held ambition to sit in the director’s chair and it appears he’s got his wish, working from one of his original scripts.
Violet, says Hollywood 411, blends the girl empowerment aspects of Thelma And Louise with elements of Superbad and Pulp Fiction, which frankly makes it sound brilliant.
Ronan, of course, is in the middle of playing a young killer in Hanna for Joe Wright, who she worked with on Atonement, and Mulligan deftly handled the comedic moments of An Education, so this could one to look forward to, assuming the actresses’ schedules can mesh…
