Fox Searchlight has set an awards season release for “Brooklyn,” slotting the Saoirse Ronan drama for a Nov. 6 launch.

“Brooklyn,” the story of an immigrant’s journey to New York, was bought during Sundance for $9 million following its Jan. 25 premiere at the festival.

Ronan plays a native of Ireland who leaves for Brooklyn in 1952. The movie was directed by John Crowley and adapted by Nick Hornby from the novel written by Colm Toibin.

Producers are Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey. Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters also star.

The first image from Brooklyn has been released, showing actors Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson in an embrace at a dance.

Shooting has finished in Ireland, after which filming moved in mid-April to Montreal in Canda for a further four weeks.

Set in the early 1950s, Brooklyn is the story of a young woman, Eilis (Ronan) who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, NY where, unlike home, she has the opportunity for work and for a future – and love, in the shape of Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen).

When a family tragedy brings her back to Ireland, she finds herself absorbed into her old community, but now with eligible Jim (Gleeson) courting her. As she repeatedly postpones her return to America, Eilis finds herself confronting a terrible dilemma – a choice between two men and two countries.

John Crowley, director of Boy A and Closed Circuit, directs an adaptation of Colm Toibin’s bestseller from a script by Nick Hornby, the novelist who wrote the screenplay for An Education. Producers are Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey.

The script was developed by BBC Films, and the co-producers are Parallel Films in Ireland and Item 7 in Canada.

BBC Films, Telefilm Canada, Ingenious, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, BFI and SODEC present the Wildgaze Films/Finola Dwyer Productions/Parallel Films/Item 7 co-production.

Hanway Films are handling international sales. Lionsgate will release in the UK and Mongrel in Canada.

All Nora has to look forward to if she stays in 1950s Ireland are slick-haired rugby players, selling cigarettes one at a time at the local shop, and bad weather. So when a kindly priest, Father Flood, sponsors her to go to America, she packs her meagre belongings, says goodbye to her mother and her sister, Rose, and hello to…

Brooklyn, which with its bright lights, brownstones and brash confidence is a shock for timid Nora. Seasickness from the treacherous journey to Ellis Island transforms into homesickness as she gets to Mrs. Kehoe’s daunting lodging house, full of gossiping single girls.

Nora gets a job at a glamorous department store and through a sweet young plumber called Tony she has all kinds of new experiences: the Yankees, Coney Island, proper spaghetti sauce…and love.

A tragedy in the family forces her to return to Ireland, but she marries Tony in secret before she goes. Once home, everyone is struck by Nora’s ‘new world’ sophistication. She finds comfort in the company of her old friends, and one new one: a young charmer called Jim, who encouraged by Nora’s mother, starts to woo her.

Before long, Nora must confront a terrible dilemma — a heart-breaking choice between two men and two countries; between duty and true love.

Production on buzz script Brooklyn has come together with a bang at the beginning of the America Film Market.

HanWay has boarded sales on the prestige period-drama, which will see in-demand Atonement and Hanna star Saoirse Ronan lead a top cast featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters and Sarah Gadon.

The London-based sales outfit has inked deals with Lionsgate UK for distribution in the UK and Ireland and Transmission for rights in Australia and New Zealand.

BAFTA-nominated John Crowley (Boy A) will direct Nick Hornby’s adaptation of Colm Toibin’s acclaimed novel, which is being produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey.

The film follows Nora (Ronan), a young Irish woman who leaves her small town in Ireland hoping for a brighter future in 1950s Brooklyn. Despite her initial homesickness, she falls in love with Tony (Cohen) an Italian-American who opens her eyes her new surroundings. But a family tragedy leads Nora back to Ireland where her American sophistication catches the eye of the charming Jim (Gleeson).

The project was developed by BBC Films, which is also on board to back the production, which will start shooting in April 2014.

The Irish Film Board is also funding and Parallel Films in Ireland is co-producing.

Hornby, Dwyer and Posey were all Oscar-nominated for period-drama An Education. Oscar-nominated Ronan most-recently starred in How I Live Now.

John Crowley: I’m gonna make a film called Brooklyn which is an adaptation of a novel by Colm Tóibín which Nick Hornby has adapted. We’re going to do it next year.

John Crowley: That’s a story about emigration from Ireland to America in the fifties. A young woman, who’s going to be played by Saoirse Ronan, about her story in America. I think it’s a story that we’ve never seen on film, certainly not from Ireland, yet. I think it’s an amazing story about Europe and America in the 20th Century. It’s like an epic and a postage stamp at the same time. It’s exquisite.
