Fox Searchlight has set an awards season release for “Brooklyn,” slotting the Saoirse Ronan drama for a Nov. 6 launch.

“Brooklyn,” the story of an immigrant’s journey to New York, was bought during Sundance for $9 million following its Jan. 25 premiere at the festival.

Ronan plays a native of Ireland who leaves for Brooklyn in 1952. The movie was directed by John Crowley and adapted by Nick Hornby from the novel written by Colm Toibin.

Producers are Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey. Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters also star.

This is the first look at Saoirse Ronan in her dark new role – playing a kidnap victim in a harrowing new film.
The Carlow star plays an “emotionally stunted” woman who is abducted and held prisoner in movie Stockholm, Pennsylvania.

The film shows Saoirse’s character slowly begin to develop feelings for her kidnapper after several years held captive.

It also shows her failing to maintain a relationship with her family when she is released – echoing a number of high-profile real-life stories.
It will be premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in America next month, which the 20-year-old filmed in just 19 days on a tiny budget.
She said: “It’s about a girl called Leia who’s in her early twenties. At the start she’s rescued, after seven years, from her kidnapper, who raised her in a basement.

“She has never seen the light of day until she is handed back to her biological parents in the second scene, but she doesn’t know these people.
“It’s mainly about the relationship between Leia and her mother, and how she doesn’t see why it’s wrong to be completely in love (in a childlike way) with her kidnapper, despite what he did.”

This year, Saoirse will also be seen in Brooklyn, which she filmed with Domhnall Gleeson.

The first image from Brooklyn has been released, showing actors Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson in an embrace at a dance.

Shooting has finished in Ireland, after which filming moved in mid-April to Montreal in Canda for a further four weeks.

Set in the early 1950s, Brooklyn is the story of a young woman, Eilis (Ronan) who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, NY where, unlike home, she has the opportunity for work and for a future – and love, in the shape of Italian-American Tony (Emory Cohen).

When a family tragedy brings her back to Ireland, she finds herself absorbed into her old community, but now with eligible Jim (Gleeson) courting her. As she repeatedly postpones her return to America, Eilis finds herself confronting a terrible dilemma – a choice between two men and two countries.

John Crowley, director of Boy A and Closed Circuit, directs an adaptation of Colm Toibin’s bestseller from a script by Nick Hornby, the novelist who wrote the screenplay for An Education. Producers are Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey.

The script was developed by BBC Films, and the co-producers are Parallel Films in Ireland and Item 7 in Canada.

BBC Films, Telefilm Canada, Ingenious, Bord Scannán na hÉireann/the Irish Film Board, BFI and SODEC present the Wildgaze Films/Finola Dwyer Productions/Parallel Films/Item 7 co-production.

Hanway Films are handling international sales. Lionsgate will release in the UK and Mongrel in Canada.

The 2014 Cannes Film Festival announced the official schedule earlier this week. “Lost River” is selected like we previously reported. The movie was previously titled “How To Catch A Monster“. The movie will have it’s first screening on May 20th and will have another screening the next day. Let’s hope Saoirse is able to attend the premiere!
