Sony snaps up ‘Hanna’

    May 16th, 2010     Hanna, News & Rumors     3 Replies

Moving aggressively, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisition Group has acquired all available foreign territory rights to Focus Features’ adventure thriller “Hanna,” from director Joe Wright.

Deal throws the weight of a studio behind “Hanna” in many international territories.

Focus — Universal’s specialty division — will retain distribution rights to “Hanna” in the U.S., U.K., Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Israel, Middle East and CIS. Sony Pictures Entertainment will release the film everywhere else.

Pact was engineered by Alison Thompson’s Focus Features Intl., which was shopping the project to foreign buyers at Cannes, and marks the biggest deal of the market so far. It also pairs a U.S. major with a U.S. studio specialty division.

“Hanna,” starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett and Eric Bana, is in its final month of filming in Europe and will be released in 2011. Project reteams Wright and Ronan, who worked together on Focus’ “Atonement.” Universal distributed “Atonement” internationally.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes

    Apr 9th, 2010     News & Rumors     1 Reply

Production Weekly reports that Ronan will star in The Tribes of Palos Verdes, an adaptation of Joy Nicholson’s young adult novel to be directed by Liz Friedlander.

Published in 1998, Palos Verdes takes a fairly dark perspective on California surfing culture, following a teeange girl who moves there with her troubled family and finds her only outlet in surfing. Director Friedlander has only one feature credit, the dancing drama Take The Lead, but has been behind several episodes of One Tree Hill and 90210, both shows that may influence her style with more stories of teen angst. Lucky for her she’s got an ace in the hole in Ronan, who even when mired in something as crazy as The Lovely Bones can pull off anything she wants. She’s currently playing a teen assassin in Joe Wright’s Hanna, but with nothing else pressing on the horizon, Palos Verdes could easily be what’s next.

Saoirse Ronan Up For Violet And Daisy?

    Apr 4th, 2010     News & Rumors     1 Reply

This is in no way official – and since it was posted on April 1st, we’re going to wait for a proper announcement before we truly get excited – but word has it that Carey Mulligan and The Lovely Bones’ Saoirse Ronan have signed on to star in Violet And Daisy for Geoffrey Fletcher.

Having just scored an Oscar for writing Precious, he’s looking to achieve a long-held ambition to sit in the director’s chair and it appears he’s got his wish, working from one of his original scripts.

Violet, says Hollywood 411, blends the girl empowerment aspects of Thelma And Louise with elements of Superbad and Pulp Fiction, which frankly makes it sound brilliant.

Ronan, of course, is in the middle of playing a young killer in Hanna for Joe Wright, who she worked with on Atonement, and Mulligan deftly handled the comedic moments of An Education, so this could one to look forward to, assuming the actresses’ schedules can mesh…
